What is the difference between an LCD dot-matrix display and a segment-display?

Dot-matrix displays can show graphics, Chinese characters, and other symbols; what is displayed is determined by your software and can be changed. Segment‑type displays can also display graphics, Chinese characters, and symbols, but the specific positions where graphics and Chinese characters appear are fixed—only the “8” shape or the “mi” character can be switched.
LCD dot-matrix displays are arranged according to a specific pattern; the most common type is the graphic‑dot‑matrix LCD module. These modules consist of numerous individual pixels, and by controlling these pixels, they can render text or graphics, as well as support scrolling in all directions and animated effects. For example, a 128×64 dot‑matrix LCD has 64 rows and 128 columns, totaling 128 × 64 pixels.
LCD segment‑type displays, also known as seven‑segment LCDs, are fixed‑pattern liquid crystal panels that either illuminate or remain dark at specific segments. They are suitable only for displaying simple digits and characters, primarily serving as a replacement for LED seven‑segment displays (which consist of seven segments used to show the numbers 0 through 9), such as those found on clocks, landline telephones, and calculators. The information displayed is typically limited to straightforward numerical values. Compared with segment‑type displays, dot‑matrix LCDs differ mainly in that they can render both characters and numbers, whereas dot‑matrix screens can display not only digits but also Chinese characters and images. Additionally, segment‑type LCDs tend to be more cost‑effective.
