China’s display industry is firmly in the lead: the MLED market has surpassed US$100 billion for the first time, as domestic manufacturers accelerate their technological breakthroughs.

In 2025, the global display industry will mark a milestone: the MLED (Mini/Micro LED) end‑device market is set to surpass US$100 billion for the first time, reaching US$105.9 billion, with an annual growth rate of 95.9%. This figure not only signals that display technology has entered a new phase of rapid expansion but also underscores the dominant position of Chinese display manufacturers within the global supply chain. From consolidating LCD production capacity to driving innovation in MLED technologies, Chinese companies are leveraging their full‑chain advantages to reshape the industry landscape.

MLED technology is fueling a market boom, with Mini LED backlights serving as the core growth engine.

The primary driver of market growth is the rapid adoption of Mini LED backlight technology. In 2024, global shipments of Mini LED TVs reached 7.85 million units, up 84.7% year over year. With its high contrast ratio and low power consumption, Mini LED is swiftly replacing traditional LCD and OLED technologies in the premium TV segment. Chinese manufacturers, led by TCL CSOT and BOE, have achieved domestic substitution through deep integration of Mini LED backlights with LCD panels, while leveraging cost advantages to capture a growing share of the global market. For instance, TCL CSOT has further strengthened its production capacity in the large‑size LCD segment by acquiring LGD’s Gen 8.5 line in Guangzhou, and has enhanced product performance through synergy with IPS technology.

Meanwhile, Micro LED technology is steadily transitioning from the laboratory to commercialization. Companies such as Chimei Optoelectronics have achieved breakthroughs in mass-producing TFT‑based Micro LEDs, providing technological support for emerging applications like virtual production and automotive displays. Samsung recently deployed a 105‑square‑meter LED movie stage in the UK, which employs similar technology, while Chinese manufacturers have also brought 28 projects in the LED cinema‑screen sector to fruition, underscoring the technology’s broad application potential.

LCD production capacity is becoming increasingly concentrated, with Chinese manufacturers leading global supply.

Despite the rise of MLED technology, LCD remains the mainstay of the large‑size display market. Global LCD TV panel shipments are forecast to reach 239 million units in 2025, with the top three Chinese panel manufacturers—BOE, TCL CSOT, and HKC—seeing their combined market share climb to 66%. Through mergers and acquisitions, TCL CSOT has integrated LGD’s Guangzhou plant into its production network, establishing a full‑generation footprint spanning from Gen 6 to Gen 10.5. As a result, TCL CSOT’s share of global capacity across advanced‑generation lines has surged to 22.9%, further bolstering its bargaining power and supply‑chain stability.

In niche segments, Chinese LCD panel manufacturers continue to invest heavily in innovation. For example, CNK Electronics, a leading manufacturer of display‑touchscreen modules, specializes in producing small- and medium‑size display assemblies. Its product portfolio includes monochrome LCDs, TFT modules, and OLED display solutions, which are widely used in automotive, medical, smart‑home, and other applications. CNK has established long‑term partnerships with industry leaders such as Haier and Desay. Leveraging its deep technological expertise and robust quality‑control systems—such as IATF 16949 certification—CNK sets an industry benchmark for the cost‑effectiveness and reliability of Chinese LCD panels.

Industrial Chain Collaboration and Future Challenges

The rise of China’s display industry has been underpinned by coordinated policy support and supply-chain collaboration. In 2025, the “trade-in” policy boosted demand for TVs 75 inches and larger, driving a 5% increase in panel shipment area. Nevertheless, the sector continues to face challenges: volatile MLED chip supplies and an insufficient 8K content ecosystem are hindering the widespread adoption of ultra‑high‑definition displays, while shifts in the international trade environment could also impact exports. In response, leading companies are building competitive barriers through technological innovation—such as printed OLED—and vertical integration, exemplified by CNK’s customized display solutions.

From consolidating LCD production capacity to achieving breakthroughs in MLED technology, Chinese display manufacturers are reshaping the global display ecosystem through a dual‑pronged strategy of scale and innovation. TCL CSOT’s M&A strategy, BOE’s expansion of high‑generation production lines, and the specialized, deep‑dive efforts of mid‑size and small players like CNK together paint a picture of diversified competitiveness in China’s display industry. Looking ahead, as Mini/Micro LED technologies extend into applications such as healthcare and industrial settings, Chinese manufacturers are poised to maintain their leadership in the wave of ultra‑high‑definition and intelligent displays, delivering superior “Made in China” display solutions to consumers worldwide.
