From LCD to MicroLED: A Detailed Examination of the Core Principles and Evolutionary Path of Mainstream Display Technologies

Basic Principles and Classification of Display Technology

The core of the flat-panel display (FPD) industry lies in photoelectric conversion technology, which uses electrical signals to control light generation and modulation for image display. Currently, the mainstream display technologies comprise three major categories: LCD, OLED, and MicroLED. All these technologies rely on the additive color mixing principle of red, green, and blue (RGB) to produce color.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), as a mature and widely used display technology, operates on the following principle: a backlight emits white light, which passes through a polarizer and a liquid crystal layer, then goes through an RGB color filter to produce the three primary colors. Subsequently, the brightness of each pixel is modulated by the deflection of liquid crystal molecules under voltage control. This process relies on the coordinated operation of several key components: the backlight unit, the TFT array, the liquid crystal layer, and the color filters.

In-Depth Analysis and Future Directions of LCD Technology

The backlight system in traditional LCDs has significant limitations—continuous illumination across the entire backlight panel results in relatively high power consumption. To address this, the industry has introduced MiniLED backlight technology, which divides the backlight into hundreds or even thousands of independent zones, each equipped with tiny LED chips that can be individually switched on and off, thereby substantially improving contrast ratio and energy efficiency. Quantum dot technology (QLED) represents another key advancement: by using blue light to excite quantum dot nanomaterials of varying sizes (2–10 nm), it generates pure red and green light, which, when combined with blue light, produces high‑quality white light. This technology was further recognized with the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In the realm of TFT arrays, advances in semiconductor channel materials have directly driven improvements in display performance. From early amorphous silicon (a‑Si:H) to low‑temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS), which employs a 308 nm XeCl excimer laser annealing process, and further to oxide semiconductors such as a‑IGZO, the continuous enhancement of carrier mobility has enabled displays to support higher resolutions and refresh rates. Innovations in liquid crystal layer materials are equally critical; different liquid crystal alignment modes—such as TN twisted nematic, IPS in-plane switching, and VA vertical alignment—yield distinct viewing angles, response times, and contrast characteristics.

Display Modularity vs. Technology Comparison

Liquid crystal module (LCD Module), as a complete display solution, integrates the liquid crystal panel, driver IC, backlight system, and connection interface. It is worth noting that MiniLED and QLED are, in essence, still part of LCD technology—representing improvements to the backlight system—while IPS, TN, and VA technologies involve innovations in the liquid crystal layer materials. Compared with OLED, although LCD requires a backlight system, it offers advantages in terms of lifespan and cost; MicroLED, meanwhile, is regarded as the next‑generation display technology, combining LCD’s high stability with OLED’s self‑emissive benefits, though it currently faces significant challenges in mass‑production.

As Liquid crystal display manufacturer , we need to select an appropriate technical solution based on the application scenario. Custom LCD Display It is necessary to comprehensively consider the combination of backlight type (conventional LED/MiniLED/quantum dot), TFT material (a‑Si/LTPS/Oxide), and liquid crystal mode (TN/IPS/VA) in order to meet customers’ specific requirements regarding power consumption, resolution, refresh rate, and cost. This modular approach to technology is precisely the core rationale behind modern display product development.
