Decoding AMOLED: Innovative Breakthroughs in LTPO Backplane Technology and Colorization Solutions

AMOLED display technology, with its self-emissive properties, high contrast ratio, wide color gamut, and flexible bendability, has become the mainstream choice in the small- and medium-sized consumer electronics market. Compared with traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that rely on a backlight module, AMOLED enables each pixel to emit light independently; when displaying black, it consumes virtually no power. It also features a simpler structure and significantly improved viewing angles and response times. Its core architecture comprises a backplane, an OLED emissive layer, and a thin-film encapsulation (TFE).

Backplane technology is critical to achieving high‑quality displays in AMOLED panels. In the early days, amorphous silicon (a‑Si:H) TFTs struggled to drive OLED pixels effectively due to their low mobility and insufficient stability. Today, the industry predominantly relies on two types of backplane architectures: low‑temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFTs and oxide TFTs. LTPS TFTs offer high carrier mobility, making them well suited for driving emissive pixels, while oxide TFTs feature low leakage current, which helps maintain pixel states.

Apple introduced LTPO technology in 2018, combining the advantages of both LTPS and IGZO TFTs to enable dynamic refresh‑rate adjustment, significantly reducing screen power consumption. It has since become a hallmark technology for high‑end AMOLED displays.

To address the “burn-in” issue caused by variations in the lifespan of organic materials, the industry has proposed several color‑display solutions.

WOLED (White OLED), combined with a color filter (CF), uses a single white light source to generate the three primary colors, ensuring uniform aging rates across the RGB subpixels. Another approach is blue‑light OLED paired with quantum‑dot color conversion (QD‑CC), in which the blue OLED excites a quantum‑dot film to emit red and green light.

In addition, the tandem architecture stacks multiple emissive layers via a charge-generation layer (CGL), which not only boosts brightness but also extends device lifetime. These technologies have further evolved into mainstream mass‑production solutions such as WOLED and QD‑OLED.

MicroLED is regarded as a key direction for next-generation display technology. It employs materials such as inorganic gallium nitride to fabricate micron-scale LED light-emitting units, offering long lifespans, high efficiency, and exceptionally high brightness, while eliminating the need for backlights and color‑filter systems, thus holding tremendous potential in AR/VR and other fields. Although the technology currently faces industrialization bottlenecks related to the precision of mass transfer and cost, its performance advantages are substantial. Whether through the ongoing optimization of LCD modules or the iterative advancement of AMOLED and MicroLED technologies, the display industry continues to drive improvements in visual experience, providing a wide array of options for customized LCDs and emerging display applications.
