In the previous installment, we discussed the origins and classification of liquid crystals. Today, we’ll delve deeper: How do LCD monitors actually work? How do the smartphone and computer screens in your hands, through changes in electricity and light, display such a rich and colorful array of images?
The “Heart” of the LCD: A Dance Between Electric Fields and Light
The basic principle of liquid crystal displays can be summarized as follows: The electric field controls the alignment of liquid crystal molecules, thereby regulating whether light passes through and ultimately forming an image.
Simply put, liquid crystals act like “switches” for light:
-
When no voltage is applied : Liquid crystal molecules are arranged in an orderly fashion, enabling them to rotate light by 90° and allowing it to pass through the polarizer smoothly, resulting in a “bright” state (the non-display state) on the screen;
-
When a voltage is applied : The liquid crystal molecules are disordered, preventing light from being rotated and causing it to be blocked by the polarizer, resulting in a “dark” state (the display state).

In this way, by controlling the voltage in different regions, light-and-dark contrasts can be created, thereby forming text and images.
The “Large Family” of LCD Monitors and Their Technological Differences
Depending on the degree of twist in the liquid crystal molecules, LCDs can be classified into several types, each with its own distinct characteristics in terms of performance and applications:
-
TN (Twisted Nematic) : Fast response speed and low cost, suitable for simple display devices such as calculators and watches;
-
HTN (High Twisted Nematic) : Wider operating range and slightly improved viewing angle, suitable for telephone identifiers, learning devices, and more;
-
STN (Super Twisted Nematic) : Higher contrast, suitable for high-resolution displays such as early mobile phones and GPS devices;
-
VA (Vertical Alignment) : Extremely high contrast and pristine black levels, commonly used in high-end monitors;
-
IPS (In-Plane Switching) : True colors and a wide viewing angle, making it ideal for professional applications such as design and film production;
-
TFT (Thin-Film Transistor type) Each pixel is controlled by an independent transistor, offering fast response and excellent color reproduction; it is currently the mainstream technology for smartphone and computer displays.
In short:
-
TN : Fast response and low cost, but with average color reproduction and viewing angles;
-
VA : High contrast, ideal for audiovisual entertainment;
-
IPS : Accurate color reproduction and a wide viewing angle, ideal for professional use;
-
TFT : With its outstanding overall performance, it is the top choice for modern smart devices.

How do you evaluate an LCD panel? An analysis of the four key performance metrics.
When choosing an LCD screen, in addition to size and resolution, you should also pay attention to the following four key specifications:
-
Contrast
The brightness ratio between light and dark areas—higher contrast results in sharper images with greater depth and detail. A ratio of ≥1000:1 is generally recommended. -
Response time
The speed at which a pixel transitions from bright to dark or vice versa, measured in milliseconds (ms). A shorter response time results in less motion blur, making it ideal for gaming and fast-moving video. -
Perspective range
Do the colors and brightness remain consistent when viewing the screen from different angles? IPS panels typically offer a wide 178° viewing angle. -
Color representation
This includes color gamut coverage, color accuracy, and color depth. For professional design and film production, it’s important to pay attention to the sRGB, Adobe RGB, or DCI-P3 color gamut coverage.
