Causes of unclear display on LCD segment‑type displays

The segment‑type LCD display is difficult to read and appears blurry. In the terminology of segment‑type LCDs, this issue can be described as “ghosting” or “faded characters.” For those interested in learning more, here’s a brief explanation: ghosting occurs when unwanted image content appears on the screen, caused by the drive voltage supplied to the LCD exceeding its rated operating voltage.
As the name suggests, “light‑weight font” refers to a situation where, when displayed on a segment‑type LCD screen, the text appears extremely faint, causing significant inconvenience for users. This issue is often due to the drive voltage supplied by the circuit being lower than the LCD’s rated operating voltage.
To resolve this issue, simply balance the voltages of the two components. Conversely, what happens if the drive voltage supplied by the circuit to the LCD exceeds the LCD’s rated operating voltage? The display will appear blurry and difficult to read. In both cases, the solution depends on the operating voltage: you need to adjust the resistance values between the LCD’s VDD and VLCD terminals. When the operating voltage is insufficient, the displayed characters or segments will appear faint, with colors that are noticeably lighter—this is the opposite cause of ghosting, which occurs when the circuit’s drive voltage for a segment‑type LCD is lower than its rated operating voltage.
However, there is another rather specific situation that can cause a segment‑type LCD to appear unclear or blurry: its viewing angle. It’s important to note that segment‑type LCDs have different viewing angles—common ones include the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock angles. Regardless of the display type, if a particular panel is designed with a 6 o’clock viewing angle, it means the display content remains clear when viewed directly along the vertical axis at the 6 o’clock position. Conversely, if you view the same panel from the 12 o’clock direction, the image will appear unclear or blurred, necessitating a new mold modification to adjust the viewing angle to the correct orientation.
With the exception of certain full‑viewing‑angle VA segment‑type LCDs and STN segment‑type LCDs, most other types of LCD panels do not offer a true wide viewing angle. Consequently, many segment‑type displays are typically designed with specific viewing angles—such as a 9 o’clock viewing angle (e.g., for automotive central‑control clocks), a 6 o’clock viewing angle (for electricity meters), or 3 o’clock and 12 o’clock viewing angles. For example, if a segment‑type display is optimized for a 9 o’clock viewing direction, you should view it from your own position looking toward the 9 o’clock side; if you shift your viewing angle to the 3 o’clock side, the display may become difficult or impossible to read.
In this situation, it’s highly likely that the manufacturer of the segment‑display panel made an error in its manufacturing process—specifically, with the viewing angle—or that a miscommunication occurred during the design phase. The consequence can be quite serious: the entire project would have to be scrapped and the segment‑display panel remade from scratch.
Therefore, when selecting a segment‑type LCD for mold development, customers must consider factors such as viewing angle, operating voltage, and temperature. If the display performance fails to meet their expectations, they will need to retool and recalibrate to achieve the desired results—resulting in additional mold‑tooling costs and time delays. When making a purchase, precise specification verification is critical; be sure to confirm all parameters beforehand.
