COG products often experience backlight delamination. How can this issue be resolved?

Backlight Delamination Phenomenon and Its Effects
Backlight delamination in COG products is a common issue in the industry. Particularly when customers produce PCBA semi‑finished assemblies, the product may be stored upside down or at an angle; over time, the adhesive’s bonding strength weakens, leading to backlight detachment. When this occurs, the backlight must be re‑glued, which wastes time, reduces efficiency, and compromises the product’s appearance. Therefore, it is essential to prevent this problem at the design stage.
Root Causes of Backlight Delamination and Preventive Recommendations
1. First is process control: Many manufacturers in the industry use automated backlight assembly machines, but the backlight and the LCD panel are not tightly bonded. Typically, our products require a pressure‑holding step; this can be achieved by using the rollers on the automated machine to press the components together, ensuring tight adhesion between the backlight adhesive and the liquid crystal panel.
2. The second item is the adhesive frame design: 1) Typically, our standard design includes a hook on the adhesive frame to prevent the product from falling off; 2) A cylindrical feature is incorporated into the adhesive frame, with an inner diameter equal to or 0.1 mm smaller than the glass thickness, so that after assembly it securely locks the glass in place; 3) Adhesive dimension design: if the adhesive strip is too narrow, its bonding strength will be insufficient. Generally, we tailor the adhesive’s width and thickness based on the dimensions of the LCD panel.
3. The third factor is the adhesive material: Some manufacturers in the industry, in an effort to cut costs, opt for domestically produced adhesives. However, under conditions of high temperature and high humidity, these adhesives often exhibit poor tack and are prone to delamination. To enhance adhesive performance, we at CNK use 3M’s proprietary adhesive formulation, effectively preventing backlight delamination.
