According to CINNO Research, China’s medical LCD market is projected to exceed US$1.8 billion this year, with demand for custom LCD modules accounting for more than 40%—a key technological frontier fiercely contested by display manufacturers.
I. Breakthrough in the domestic production of 4K high-refresh-rate medical displays, with custom LCD modules decoupling reliance on imports.
The high-end medical display market, long dominated by Japanese and Korean manufacturers, is now seeing a breakthrough by Chinese LCD panel companies. Tianma Microelectronics has recently put into mass production a custom 5.5-inch LCD module that combines 4K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, leveraging an independently developed RGBW pixel arrangement. This module has obtained FDA certification and has been integrated into Olympus’s next-generation electronic endoscopes, directly replacing comparable products from Sharp. As a result, the self-sufficiency rate of China’s domestic medical display supply chain has surged from 28% in 2019 to 65%, while display manufacturers such as BOE and Shenzhen Chao Optoelectronics are accelerating their efforts to develop touch‑enabled modules tailored for surgical robots.

Meanwhile, TCL CSOT has tailored a 6.2‑inch antimicrobial LCD panel for portable ultrasound devices, employing a nano‑coating that reduces liquid‑contact failure rates by 90%. Industry analysts note that such highly customized products can command gross margins as high as 45%, three times those of standard panels. In the first half of 2023, Chinese LCD manufacturers filed 1,276 patent applications for custom display modules in the medical sector, a year‑on‑year increase of 68%. 
III. Collaborative Upgrading of the Industrial Chain: Display Manufacturers Tap into a Blue-Ocean Market
In response to the personalized needs of medical‑device manufacturers, domestic display‑manufacturing companies are establishing rapid‑response systems. Innolux has set up a “Medical Display Innovation Center,” cutting the development cycle for custom modules from 18 months to 9 months; Visionox, meanwhile, has partnered with Mindray Medical to establish a joint laboratory, developing dedicated driver ICs tailored for applications such as endoscopes and patient monitors. This deep‑collaboration model has helped Chinese LCD‑display firms increase their share of the global medical‑display market from 12% in 2020 to 31% in 2023. According to Omdia’s forecast, by 2025 the Chinese market for customized LCD modules used in medical devices will reach US$5.3 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 24%.
